Everyday, women and girls around the world face violence and discrimination. Ending all discrimination against women and girls is not only a basic human right, it’s crucial for sustainable future. It’s proven that empowering women and girls helps economic growth and development.
I’m sure many of us have heard that women don’t make good doctors as they need to care for their family back at home and won’t be able to give their fullest at work. Is this really true?
Being a daughter, a wife, a mother, a grandmother and so on does take up alot of our time, but we still want to expand our care and love to others. So, why is this misconception still around to date? A primary causes of gender discrimination in the workplace is that women are under-represented in many different industries, especially in male-dominated industries.
I found a career that I truly enjoy, but to find a place to put my skills that I’m proud of was a little adventure of my own. So, I ventured out into the private sector. Truth to be told, i was a little bummed as certain clinics only looked for male doctors as they preferred doctors that could stay overnight in the clinic.
This was going on for a while until I found Dr. Tan & Partners clinic in KL Eco City Mall (DTAP @ KL Eco City). I was truly overwhelmed as I was called in for an interview the very same week. I became excited when I found out I was hired by this clinic. My interview questions were purely based on my experience and what I could bring to the table.
THAT WAS IT! No questions on my family members or looking at me full of doubts! My mind’s voice was “FINALLY, a company with equal opportunity employer!”.
As I worked in DTAP KL, I soon found out that it’s a workplace that is safe and friendly for women. The clinic is well equipped with needs for women, not only for a professional, but also for my female patients. I was coached by fellow colleagues that were male and female.
They gave me my own space to work and build up my own rapport but yet guiding me through out. I have seen multiple female patients that come in for family planning, from various different backgrounds. We in DTAP support women’s right to choose by providing professional medical support for family planning without judging them.
I would always tell my patients to speak up to those that speak down. No one should be judged especially when we are not in their shoes. This is also another reason that I strongly believe why DTAP KL supports Women’s Rights. Any women can walk into our clinic with no worries as we are here to help them with open arms.
I adore my superiors and colleagues because I’m allowed to voice out my needs and opinions without being looked down upon. I am given the freedom of speech.
My opinions are respected and are taken into consideration. Never once was i shut down or been told off. When I hear stories on how some of my female friends are treated otherwise, I feel blessed to have found my current second home!
